Gavin Steingo has played guitar most of his life. His first experiences were in a rock band in 1990s South Africa, where he performed regularly at clubs in the Johannesburg area and was occasionally featured on radio and TV. In the late 1990s, he studied with local jazz legend Johnny Fourie and played in the Johannesburg Youth Jazz Orchestra at major events, such as the National Arts Festival.

Gavin is now a full professor of music at Princeton University, where he teaches courses on ethnomusicology, sound studies, and acoustic ecology. With auditory neuroscientist Asif Ghazanfar, he runs The Animal Song Collective, a research unit that explores the idea of animal music from scientific and humanistic perspectives. He has written two books, edited several volumes, and won multiple international academic awards and fellowships. He performs with the electro-country group, Owen Lake and the Tragic Loves, and is developing a novel approach to composition that he calls "perceptualism"
